Gentrification is sweeping through wide swathes of Brooklyn, threatening moderate income tenants - including rent stabilized tenants. Some landlords are fine (bless them!) but some are from hell. Let's share resources on how to fight back and keep our homes and communities intact!

How do you feel about gentrification in your area?

MY LANDLORD IS SCUM!

I'm sick and tired of being pushed around by a greedy, abusive landlord and I'm fighting back - and I want everyone to know about it.  I ALSO WANT TO HEAR FROM OTHERS BECAUSE MY STORY ISN'T UNIQUE - I'd be happy to post your story here so other tenants can find out ahead of time how bad some landlords in our area are.

I've set up a resources page for everyone to use. Keep checking back!Feel free to submit any resources you'd like me to add!

P.S.: December 6, 2005: My lawyer phoned me this morning to let me know that we'd WON our housing court case! If you want my lawyer's phone number, contact me and I'll give it to you.

And here's the latest in unsubstantiated rumors: my scummy landlord may actually be trying to sell the building, after all this!

February, 2006: The rumor was true - the building was indeed sold, and the new owners seem ok. Hopefully this is an opportunity to start over with a clean slate, but I'm leaving the website up for a while in case I run into new problems along the way. THE STORY CONTINUES! I'VE ADDED A NEW PAGE - SEE www.geocities.com/mylandlordisscum/2006 FOR MORE INFO!

More pictures of the building
We may have some violations here; at the very least, there are conditions that need to be addressed that the landlord is aware of and appears to be ignoring.
The superintendent, Manuel Perez, testified in court that the roof was new.  It's interesting that it's got obvious water damage from a leak. here's another shot of the leak from the roof
and one more of the leaky roof just for good measure
There's no lock or alarm bar on the new door to the roof.  This bothers me because it's a safety hazard for my 6 year old son.
None of the hallway windows has screens, which means that we get plenty of flies and mosquitoes in the building during warm weather.
We used to have an inspection certificate in the entryway; the card was removed in the summer of 2005 because it got filled up after Vera Dalcamo's daughter started making building inspectors come to the premises.

Resources for Tenants

For lots of details on NYC agencies, including specific staff members’ names, titles and contact information, consult a current copy of the NYC Greenbook – it’s the city directory, and most libraries have a reference copy on file – check with your local reference librarian. You can also purchase a copy from CityBooks. 311 is supposed to be an extensive switchboard to city agencies, but there’s been some controversy in the news lately about how effective they really are.
